Tom Waits For No One - Animated 1979 / John Lamb

The pioneering animated, American music video Tom Waits For No One Kickstarter campaign opened today. The Kickstarter is to fund restoration of the first rotoscoped music video, which was released in 1979 and disappeared into obscurity before MTV debuted in 1981. Within hours of opening, the campaign was chosen as a “staff pick” by Kickstarter.

The Kickstarter will also fund a scrapbook of art from the film and its animators. Director

John Lamb recently rediscovered the film and all its elements - and the film, starring Tom Waits, is being hailed as a lost gem. In addition, the animators on the film went on to great things - Academy Award winner, Academy Award nominee, co-director of Monsters Inc., animator at Disney, designer for Electronic Arts, and many others.

Completed in 1979, too early for MTV, the film had no commercial release and no distribution.

The film opened to immediate acclaim, winning top prize at a Hollywood film festival, but lasted just one night with “Spike and Mike’s Festival of Animation” for being “too racy”, and then disappeared into obscurity. Take a look at this unique campaign and help bring this film back to life!
